Dr. Philip Yox earned his Ph.D. in Chemistry at Iowa State University (2022) studying thermoelectric materials with complex crystal structures. During his Ph.D. he frequently visited the Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Lab to perform in-situ and high-resolution X-ray diffraction experiments which provided important insights on the synthetic pathways and crystalline phases. He also synthesized and grew crystals of 20 novel extended solids, solving their crystal structures through single crystal X-ray diffraction. After his Ph.D., Dr. Yox became the first postdoctoral fellow in the Maughan Lab at the Colorado School of Mines. At Mines, he contributed to building the Maughan Lab, trained graduate and undergraduate researchers, and studied the structure-property relationships of solid-state Li-ion conductors.

His broad research interests include solid-state synthesis, and material design of thermoelectrics and ion-conductors. Dr. Yox enjoys investigating complicated crystallographic problems and thinking about the role of synthetic routes in the emergent structure and properties of materials. Outside of work, Dr. Yox is an amateur pipe organist, tennis player, nature enthusiast, and father of two kids.
